Steven Gregory Drozd was born June 11, 1969 in Houston, TX. His father Vernon was a professional saxophone player. He began playing drums at the age of 6 and played in his father's polka band when he was 10. He took up piano (which he focused on in his early teens) and eventually guitar, slide guitar, bass, xylophone, plastic-tube-attached-to-talk-box and whatever else is needed to do the job.

He joined the Flaming Lips as a drummer in 1991 and recorded "Transmissions From the Satellite Hearts", and with subsequent albums came to compose more of the music and play most of the instruments. 1999's brilliant symphonic rock album "The Soft Bulletin" was a defining moment, and 2003's "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" saw a surge in popularity for the band, which was picked up on by the recent "At War with the Mystics".

Steven has recorded with some other artists, including Elliott Smith and Steve Burns. He lives in Oklahoma with his wife Becky and son Daniel (who was born last September).
